Since it launched its first smartphone back in 2014, OnePlus has become known for its high quality, yet affordable models.
Fast-forward to today, and this is still the case with OnePlus’ latest premium flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 7 Pro.
The smartphone has many of the same impressive features as its competitors, including a triple-lens rear camera and stunning curved glass display, but at £649, is a fraction of the cost.
The tech firm unveiled the smartphone at an event in London today, alongside the OnePlus 7 smartphone, and new Bullets Wireless 2 headphones.
Pete Lau, founder and CEO of OnePlus, said: “We constantly challenge ourselves to give people the best experience possible.
“A great user experience means freedom, and should enhance your life instead of distracting you from it. I’m so proud of what we’ve built with the OnePlus 7 series, and can’t wait for people to try out the display.”
The OnePlus 7 Pro features a 6.67-inch curved glass display with tiny bezels, and notably, no notch.
While its predecessors – including the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T – had notches at the top of their screens to house the front-facing camera, the notch has been replaced with a discreet pop-up camera at the top of the device.
This 16MP front-facing camera is covered in sapphire glass, and pops up and down within 0.53 seconds.
OnePlus has included silicone lining on the mechanism to prevent dust and water from sneaking in, and claims that the camera can be safely opened an closed 150 times a day, every day, for over five years.
Meanwhile, the back of the smartphone features a triple lens rear camera setup, made up of a 48MP main lens, a 16MP wide angle lens, and a 8MP telephoto lens.
In terms of performance, the OnePlus 7 Pro boasts an impressive Snapdragon 855 processor with up to 12GB of RAM, as well as faster flash storage, thanks to UFS 3.0 storage.
Like the OnePlus 6T, the OnePlus 7 Pro features an in-screen fingerprint sensor. However, this has been made larger (7x7mm), and uses a new sensor, bringing the unlock time to just 0.21 seconds.
OnePlus has also included its iconic Warp Charge technology in the new smartphone, which means the 4,000mAh battery goes from 0-50% in just 20 minutes!
Other notable features include screen recording capabilities, stereo speakers, and additional pro settings on Gaming Mode.
The OnePlus 7 Pro is available in three colours – Nebula Blue, Almond, or Mirror Grey – and will begin shipping on 21 May.
Prices range from £649 (128GB with 6GB RAM) through to £799 (256GB with 12GB RAM).
ONEPLUS 6 LAUNCH: WATCH THE MIRROR’S FIRST LOOK REVIEW
Hands-on with the OnePlus 7 Pro
Ahead of today’s launch, Mirror Online was given an exclusive sneak-peek at the OnePlus 7 Pro.
The display is absolutely stunning, with the curved glass and small bezels giving it a classy and premium look.
I must admit I’m glad that the notch has been given the boot – the uninterrupted display is definitely more pleasant when gaming or watching videos on the smartphone.
While I was initially sceptical of the pop-up camera, I was impressed at the speed at which it popped up, and how discreet it looks when up.
Unfortunately, I’ve not used the smartphone for long enough to test OnePlus’ claims that the pop-up camera is both dust- and water-resistant – watch this space!
One of the quirkiest features that I really enjoyed is the freefall detection on the pop-up camera.
This means that if the smartphone detects it’s in freefall (for example, if you drop it), it will automatically retract the camera – ideal if you’re pretty clumsy like me!
Meanwhile, the triple-lens rear camera is up there with the best of them. I particularly enjoyed taking photos in portrait mode using the telephoto lens, as well as wide-angle photos using the wide-angle lens.
The in-screen fingerprint sensor was noticeably larger and more reactive, allowing me to unlock the smartphone with a quick touch of the screen.
And as ever with OnePlus smartphones, charging the device was an absolute dream, thanks to the Warp Charge technology.
Overall, this is one of the best premium smartphones on the market, and with prices starting at £649, is a fantastic option for those looking for a device that won’t break the bank.
